Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
Doctors of Chiropractic – often referred to as Chiropractors or Chiropractic Physicians – practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.
In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.
Newborns, infants, children, seniors and even back surgery patients can get chiropractic care. Naturally, adjustments are tailored to your size, age and particular health issue.
The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called "chiropractic adjustment." The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.
Doctors of chiropractic may assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate. Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient’s condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of the health care team.
First Visit
Your first visit normally takes around 30 minutes. The purpose of your consultation with the doctor is to discuss your health goals and see if chiropractic is likely to help you or if you need to be referred elsewhere.
If your condition is one that will typically respond from chiropractic care, a thorough examination will help identify the cause of your problem. This will include a physical exam, range of motion testing, postural analysis, orthopedic and neurological tests.
After we study your health history and correlate our examination findings, we can start treatment. Most of our patients begin to see results from the very first adjustment. Your chiropractor will techniques specific for every patient's unique condition, be they newborns, athletes or pensioners.
Any X-rays or MRIs done within the last five years will help us evaluate your condition and should be brought to the initial consultation. If you don’t have any images, your chiropractor will only recommend them if required..
Second Visit
Your second visit is ideally within two days of your first visit. It will last at least 20 minutes. During that time we will assess how your body responded to the first treatment. Your succeeding adjustments are as important as the first one. Like a regular workout at the gym, each visit builds on the ones before. Miss a visit and you can lose the momentum necessary to make the needed changes.
The number of your follow-up visits depends on your health problems and other factors such as age and general state of health. Your response to your initial visit helps us decide how you can achieve your optimal results.
Regular Visits
A regular visit may require just 10 to 15 minutes. Thanks to clinical experience and with the groundwork laid, we can quickly size up the condition of your spine and nervous system, adjust you and get you on your way. Your care in the office will also be supported by lifestyle changes and exercises for you to complete at home.
We recognize your time is valuable. So we do everything possible to run on time and minimise the impact on your busy life.
